Commodore 64 Joystick Ports

Tue Sep 26, 2006 12:26 am

Hi guys.

Do all C64 games for single players use the joystick port 2? If so, why didn't they use port 1? That would make a lot more sense.

Also, in 2 player games, is Player 1 still mapped to port 2?

Thanx 4 looking.

Most games were (are) Port 2, but some are port 1 (about 8%). Why? Who knows? Unless you use the GameBase frontend and set the ports to autoswitch for you, then you will need to change to port 1/2 when you play a game.

I use that GameBase setting. It is incredibly useful.

I was wondering if, in 2 player games, Player 1 was ever Port 2.

Most single player games use joystick port 2, because port 1 interferes with the keyboard. Just try a joystick connected at port 1 at the blue startup screen. You will see characters when you move the joystick. This doesn't happen with a joystick in port 2.

funny thing: internally (hardware) joystick two is called joystick one and vice versa
